Commentary:Nationalists see Sindh’s division in MQM’s new bill
Sindhi nationalists have strongly reacted to MQM's bill for the 20th
amendment in the constitution. They say it is a plan to divide Sindh
province. Though MQM leaders and its chief have made it clear that they
do not want to divide the province. Party leaders have issued statements
to remove doubts of the Sindhis living in the rural areas, but they are
not accepting their words.
People like Ayaz Latif Palijo think
that the bill has been introduced to pay the way for the division of
Sindh. He has urged nationalist leaders to compel PPP parliamentarians
to oppose the bill. He warned that it could create 1971 situation. His
statements indicate a thin veiled threat to MQM.
Dr Qadir Magsi
has termed the bill as a precursor to the MQM slicing Liaquatpur off
from Sindh. He does not believe on MQM's professed stance.
I have
mentioned my misgivings in one of my posts that movement of creation of
new provinces can turn violent because it has been tabled by MQM. This
bill should have come from parliamentarians from Hazara and Seraiki
areas. My views have angered my friends in MQM. I hope this issue does
not strain the relations between Sindhis and Mohajirs.
